How do I know what size my Dachshund needs?
Welcome! You probably already know that Hashteckel specializes in harnesses and coats for Dachshunds. Each product is handcrafted, specifically designed to fit the unique build of Dachshunds. After years of study and testing, we’ve developed the perfect coat and the ideal, well-fitting harness.
To find the correct size, we ask you to carefully measure your Dachshund according to the measurement guide provided for each product. We do not use standard sizes like XS for Kaninchen Dachshunds and S for miniature Dachshunds, as Dachshunds, like people, come in various shapes and sizes. Always measure your Dachshund before ordering.
On this page, you’ll find detailed instructions on how to measure your Dachshund for the correct size harness, coat, or collar. Instructional videos for measuring a harness and a coat will be available here soon.
PREPARATION
What you’ll need before you start:
> A flexible measuring tape
> Pen and paper
> A Dachshund
Use a flexible measuring tape and ensure your Dachshund is standing upright while being measured, not sitting.
DETERMINING THE CORRECT SIZE FOR A DACHSHUND HARNESS
To choose the correct size harness for your Dachshund, follow the measurement instructions for the harness you have selected. You will measure two areas: the neck-shoulder area and the chest girth.
Neck- shoulder area
Our harnesses sit lower on the neck and shoulders than standard dog harnesses. They rest on the Dachshund's sternum, the protruding point at the front of the chest. Measure slightly below the collar position, ensuring the measuring tape passes over the sternum. Measure the entire neck and shoulder area, including the sternum, and note the measurement in centimeters.
Chest girth
Our Dachshund harnesses sit further back on the chest than standard dog harnesses. Place two fingers vertically behind your Dachshund's armpits and measure the chest girth just behind your fingers. Do not measure directly behind the front legs but slightly further back. Write down this measurement in centimeters.

Consulting the Size Chart
Compare your measurements with the size chart of the chosen harness. The size chart reflects the dimensions of the harness, not your Dachshund. Find where your Dachshund’s measurements fit within the ranges.
Example
Your measurements are:
> Neck- shoulder area: 36 cm
> Chest girth: 55 cm
From the chart:
- Neck- shoulder area: falls between 33 and 40 cm = Size XXS-XS
- Chest girth: falls between 48 and 60 cm = Size XXS-XS
If your Dachshund weighs 6-10 kg, choose size XXS-XS.
Other results
If your Dachshund’s measurements do not match a single size, contact us for advice. Please include your Dachshund’s weight and a photo in a standing position, taken from the side.
DETERMINING THE CORRECT SIZE FOR A DACHSHUND COAT
To find the correct coat size, follow the measurement instructions for the coat you’ve selected. All our coats follow the same sizing system. If your Dachshund already wears a size S in one of our coats and hasn’t grown, you can reorder this size from the webshop.
Note: bathrobes have a different sizing system than our Dachshund coats. For bathrobes, measure only the back length as per the guide and choose the size accordingly.
The size chart shows adjustable ranges for each coat. For example, a neck size of 35-40 cm means the coat’s neck area can be adjusted from 35 to 40 cm using Velcro. Similarly, back length is adjustable: the more you tighten the coat under the chin, the further the coat will sit on the back.
To find the correct size, measure three areas:
Neck area
Measure around the neck where a collar typically sits. Record the measurement in centimeters.
Chest girth
Place two fingers vertically behind the armpits and measure the chest girth just behind your fingers. Do not measure directly behind the front legs. Note the measurement.
Back length
Measure from the points of the shoulder blades to the base of the tail. Do not measure from the neck to the tail or beyond. Start at the shoulders and end where the tail begins. Record this measurement.

Consulting the size chart
Compare your measurements with the coat’s size chart. The size chart shows the dimensions of the coat, not your Dachshund.
Different results
Check the neck girth, chest girth, and back length. If most measurements align with size S, choose size S. If only the neck girth falls under size XS and the rest match size S, choose size S, as back length is key and the coat is adjustable with Velcro.
If you’re unsure about the size, contact us for advice.
DETERMINING THE CORRECT SIZE FOR A DACHSHUND COLLAR
To find the right size collar for your Dachshund, measure the neck girth where the collar usually sits. Place two fingers under the measuring tape to ensure the collar won’t be too tight.
Compare your measurement with the collar’s size chart. Ensure your measurement falls within the specified range. The chart reflects the collar’s dimensions, not your Dachshund’s.
Different results
If you measured your Dachshund’s neck at 38 cm, choose a collar size within the range of 30-40 cm. This will ensure a proper fit.
If you’re unsure about the size, feel free to contact us for advice.
