What do I need for my Dachshund puppy?
How cool! Your Dachshund puppy will arrive soon and you want to be well prepared. We know exactly how this feels, so we've made a handy overview of the items we found indispensable when we got our Dachshund puppy Bear.
Place to sleep: sleep, sleep, poop, pee, eat, play and then sleep again. This is what your Dachshund puppy's first few weeks look like (and still does after that, haha!). It is therefore important that your puppy has a nice and safe place to sleep. Choose a neck and back supporting dog pillow for long sleeping moments and, for example, a Dachshund sleeping bag for during the day and on the road. If you choose this right from the start for your Dachshund puppy, these items will soon feel like their own. It is important to choose a good pillow that your Dachshund puppy will lie on for a long time. The average dog cushions are not good enough for your Dachshund's back and neck: they have a loose filling that shifts or clumps quickly. Certainly Dachshunds need good support to prevent back and neck problems. Just like lying on a good mattress! For example, you can place the Dachshund sleeping bag next to you on the couch, which can also be your own place for your Dachshund puppy. Puppies in particular love the sense of security of a nest (because that's where they come from after all) and a Dachshund sleeping bag is therefore ideal. You can also take it with you in the car (combined with a Dachshund puppy harness and seat belt for safe transport). Tip: ask the breeder of your Dachshund puppy if you can take the rug, shredded paper or toy that was in the litter with you. This smell is familiar and helps your puppy get used to its new home faster.
Drinking and eating bowls: of course you also have to eat and drink! Make sure you always have food and drink bowls at home, preferably a food and food bowl in a holder or a somewhat heavier food bowl set so that your Dachshund puppy does not roam around the room or kitchen with the bowl. Due to the build of the Dachshund, it sometimes wants to "cough" after drinking (this is called reverse sneezing), this often happens if your puppy drinks too quickly. It can help to place the drinking bowl a little higher, which is less easy for your Dachshund puppy, but it helps against rapid drinking. Also think of drinking and eating bowls for on the road so that you always bring your own bowl for your Dachshund puppy.
Bench: we regularly get the question: is a bench necessary for raising my Dachshund puppy? Nowadays it is certainly not necessary, but we notice that the breeders of the somewhat old stamp recommend this. Locking up your Dachshund puppy is really not necessary, but it may of course be the case that you have a household in which it is useful from time to time (think of children, distractions, other pets, etc.). And let's be honest: sometimes it's nice to create clarity for your Dachshund puppy without him or her peeing or pooping all over your house. Make sure the crate is not too big, if this is the case, your puppy can defecate and pee in the crate. Don't forget to put in a nice bench blanket, the Dachshund sleeping bag or sheepskin!
