Does my Dachshund need a coat?
In this blog we answer the frequently asked question:
Does my Dachshund need a coat?
Bear is now 5 years old and when he was still a puppy he was regularly shivering. That could not be otherwise because he was 10 weeks when he came to us and that was in December! Every fifteen minutes he had to go outside to potty train him. we think he suffered a trauma, haha!
Winter is approaching: water cold and it is going to freeze. This creates a lot of winter fun that Dachshunds love. A question that we regularly receive from dog owners but also Dachshund owners is: 'Does my Dachshund need a coat?' In other words: is my dog cold?
When Bear was about 1 year old we saw that he started shivering as soon as he was standing still outside. We honestly thought he was enthusiastic and therefore shivered but our vet told us otherwise:
"In general, small dogs, and therefore also Dachshunds, do not cope very well with the cold. This has to do with their often short coat and low fat content. Dachshunds are low to the ground and are more likely to be cold than large dogs. Knowing this, short-haired Dachshunds and thin-fur dachshunds are often more likely to be cold-haired than rough-haired and long-haired Dachshunds. Most small dogs show symptoms of cold from 8C®and then a jacket can be a good solution for your Dachshund!" Read more about cold and large dogs here.
If you see your Dachshund shivering or feel that he is cold, do not hesitate: YES! Your Dachshund needs a coat.
Dogs are not dress-up dolls and we thought the idea of a jacket for our Dachshund was a crazy idea. When we kept an eye on Bear we saw that he was really cold! Not as soon as we went for a walk in the snow or while it was freezing because then he was moving. But as soon as he had to wait outside or went along in our old car (which takes a little longer to heat).
We went looking for a suitable jacket for Dachshunds but that turned out to be quite difficult! The proportions are very different from most small dogs of course. After trying on a number of jackets, we quickly came to the conclusion that we did not find them tough enough or that the jacket did not give enough freedom of movement. Finally, most jackets for small dogs were often too short on the back for a Dachshund and too deep under the belly so he peed in it. After a long search we found the perfect Dachshund jacket: tough, waterproof, easy to put on and take off and, if you are tired of the color, also to turn around. We can go on and on about this beautiful coat for Dachshunds because in addition to not ruining the tough image of the Dachshund, the jacket is affordable and a collar or harness can also be worn underneath.
Now, 2 years later, our collection has been supplemented with jackets for every type of weather and occasion: rain, cold, as a fashion item, for the bike or in the camper.
As soon as we walk to the car, our Dachshund already knows that he has to wear his coat: he does not mind at all and when we go for a walk he does not have to wear the coat.
